Australian dollar breaks through 88 cents US

The Australian dollar has closed the last trading day of 2007, breaking through USD$.88 cents barrier after some strong private sector credit data and the announcement of a continual slump in US home loans.

At 5:00pm the Australian dollar was trading at USD$.8818 cents which was up from Friday's closing rate of USD$.8726 US cents.
